The singing/acting young adult from a singing instruction perspective.

چکیده
Any time a young adult wants to begin lessons with a teacher of singing, it is essential that the teacher be aware of the limitations of the student's knowledge, training, and experience. If the singing or speaking voice of this young adult presents any evidence of being vocally disordered, singing instruction should not begin until that person has been examined by a laryngologist who is conversant with the problems of singers. Medical problems or ones related to speech pathology should be left to specialists in those fields. Singing instruction should not begin, or should not resume in the case of a person who has developed a dysphonia while studying, until cleared by a laryngologist who indicates that the problem is due to functional misuse or abuse of the voice rather than to medical causes. Most young adults entering a voice studio, however, do not present symptoms of serious vocal dysfunction. Rather, the speaking and singing sounds they produce often indicate that the vocal mechanism is being used with less than optimal efficiency. The resulting sounds may be lacking in the desirable characteristics of tonal beauty, loudness, expressiveness, and freedom of production, but this does not necessarily indicate that vocal abuse is taking place. At the same time, it must be recognized that when an inefficient voice is used extensively or under stressful situations it often becomes dysphonic. It is essential, therefore, that young adults are encouraged to learn how the vocal mechanism functions and to establish patterns of vocal use that will

Juvenile sparrows preferentially eavesdrop on adult song interactions.
Recent research has demonstrated that bird song learning is influenced by social factors, but so far has been unable to isolate the particular social variables central to the learning process. Here we test the hypothesis that eavesdropping on singing interactions of adults is a key social event in song learning by birds. In a field experiment, we compared the response of juvenile male song spar...
متن کاملThe influence of vocal training and acting experience on measures of voice quality and emotional genuineness
Vocal training through singing and acting lessons is known to modify acoustic parameters of the voice. While the effects of singing training have been well documented, the role of acting experience on the singing voice remains unclear. In two experiments, we used linear mixed models to examine the relationships between the relative amounts of acting and singing experience on the acoustics and p...
متن کاملUnique technological voice method (The YUBA Method) shows clear improvement in patients with cochlear implants in singing.
It is known that children with cochlear implants tend to sing off-key, monotonously, and flat. There are a few reports that it is possible to improve off-key singing mainly through instruction using the falsetto voice for people with normal hearing. We examined whether their singing skills could be improved through instruction. Eight subjects (five boys and three girls aged 10.4+/-2.4 years) wi...
متن کاملGonads and singing play separate, additive roles in new neuron recruitment in adult canary brain.
New neurons are constantly added to the high vocal center (HVC) of adult male canaries, Serinus canaria. Singing and testosterone (T) are known to promote this addition, but it is not known whether either variable can act on its own and what is their effect when acting together. We studied this question by castrating adult male canaries in late summer and quantifying their song in early fall. I...
متن کاملEffects of Piano, Singing, and Rhythm Instruction on the Spatial Reasoning of At-Risk Children
Previous research has demonstrated that preschool children score higher on spatial tests following piano instruction. Three studies were conducted to answer three questions regarding these effects: (1) Which cognitive processes are enhanced by piano instruction? (2) Do different types of instruction have differential effects? (3) Are these effects durable and generalizable? In Study 1, at-risk ...
